SUNNY THOUGHT THURSDAY would never come. When it finally arrived, she got up early and started packing kitchen stuff in moving boxes Cass had picked up the afternoon before. She stopped only to dress and go to Duke’s funeral at St. Mary’s downtown. On her way home, she stopped by the shelter to pick up Leo.

“You certainly look spiffy,” Annabelle said.

“Thanks, but I had to go to a funeral. Leo ready to go?”

“Ready and waiting. I even gave him a bath.”

Sunny took care of the paperwork and wrote a check to the shelter.

“Thanks,” Annabelle said. “Looks like you have a dog.”

“Or he has me. I bought him a new collar and leash.” Sunny pulled the items from the bag she brought while Annabelle retrieved Leo from his pen.

“I think he knows something is up,” Annabelle said. “Look at that tail.”

It was doing some serious wagging. And Leo was grinning.

“Hey, boy. Ready to go home with me?”

He made a soft “woof” and looked up expectantly. They changed out his collar, and Sunny attached the new leash.

“Come on, fella. Let’s go finish packing. You want to wrap or tape?”

Sunny was halfway home before she thought about Sadie. Sometimes it was easy to forget her when, for days at a time, only empty bowls and used kitty litter gave any indication she was around.

“Leo, I have a cat named Sadie. She’s shy, and she can be cantankerous. Please be patient with her. We’ll work something out about territory if we have to.”

Leo hung his head over her seat and nuzzled her ear.

“Good dog.”
